First world rally: 1998 San Remo

Known for his PR prowess Galli has made a name for himself on the WRC circuit despite a slightly inexperienced career in a World Rally Car. His first major achievement came in 1998 when he won the Italian GpN championship in a demanding fashion with five round wins; one of which included San Remo a round of the Production World Rally Championship. This result prompted him into a full six–round attack of the PWRC in 1999 where he finished an impressive sixth on debut, winning the Italian leg in San Remo for the second consecutive year.

2000 saw the Italian back on home soil contesting the GpN championship and back in the winner’s seat as he again won the championship with dominance. The next few years saw selected WRC and Italian events but it was 2004 that really launched Galli onto the world scene. Selected as a works driver for the Mitsubishi team in the PWRC he competed on 12 events and then a further 13 the following year with the Mitsubishi outfit.

Running as a privateer in 2006 Galli showed quality on the six WRC events he competed in, in a world rally car, to finish the year eleventh overall. 2006 was also the year Galli scored his first and only podium in the WRC by finishing third in Argentina. 2007 began well with a solid sixth place on Rally Norway but sadly, due to budget restrictions, the Italian superstar was forced to sit out the rest of the year until returning in 2008 with the Stobart VK M–Sport Ford rally team.

Galli is one of the true characters of the WRC and with good reason; his huge fan base stretches as far across the globe as Australia.
