Beginning his WRC career in 1996 at Rally Monte–Carlo Bernacchini spent the next five years competing on selected rounds of the World Championship predominantly in a Fiat Cinquecento. As well, he also took on one round in a Subaru Impreza WRC with driver Paolo Andreucci.
2001 was the year Bernacchini first paired up with Galli on the world stage as the pair contested Rally Monte–Carlo in a GpN Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI but unfortunately retired from the event.
In 2002, with Andrea Dallavilla, he took part in Rallye Monte–Carlo, Spain, Acropolis, Germany, Italy and Great Britain in a Citroën Saxo VTS S1600. 2003 was also a strong year for the Italian who, together with Alfredo De Dominicis, competed on Rally Sweden, New Zealand, Argentina, Cyprus, Germany and France in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI. The same year he also contested the Junior Rally Championship with Mirco Baldacci in a Fiat Punto S1600 taking part in Rally Monte–Carlo, Turkey, Acropolis and Great Britain.
The next two years were devoted to driver Mirco Baldacci and the JWRC. In 2004 Bernacchini became a member of the Suzuki JWRC team run by Monster Sport Europe competing on Rally Monte–Carlo, Acropolis, Turkey, Finland, Great Britain, Italy and Spain all in a Suzuki Ignis S1600. Also that year with Baldacci in a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VI and VII, he took part in Rally New Zealand, Argentina and Australia. Again in 2005 the pair took on the JWRC competing in a Fiat Palio S1600 on Rally Monte–Carlo, Turkey, Greece, Finland, Germany, France, Spain.
2006 saw Bernacchini start racing with Galli fulltime as they took on Rally Monte–Carlo, Sweden, France, Argentina, Italy and Finland in both a Peugeot 307 WRC and a Mitsubishi Lancer WRC. This year saw Bernacchini step on the WRC podium for the first time on Rally Argentina. Last year he again paired up with Galli in three rounds of the WRC in a Citroen Xsara WRC on Rally Sweden, Norway and Portugal. He also took part in some Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) rounds with driver Luca Betti in an Honda Civic; Ypres, Russia, Madeira, Barum Rally (first class A7), San Remo (first class A7) and Valais (first class A7).
